PAPER TIGER

Paper Tiger began life many years ago as a bedroom experiment: produced future hip-hop, broken beat and dub incorporating live instruments and musicians. Since then the project has gone from strength to strength, gaining support from Radio 1 (Mary-Anne Hobbs), 1xtra, Charlie Dark and 6Music (Steve Lamacq), and forthcoming releases include tracks with Foreign Beggars (Dented), Juice Aleem (Big Dada), Sabira Jade (DJ Vadim, Hextatic) and Dudley Perkins (Stones Throw).

Over the past 18 months, an 8-piece live band has been performing these productions and more to packed out audiences across Europe. The shows are a fully live, uninterrupted mix of spaced-out hip-hop, broken beat, dubstep and more: no sequencers or backing tracks, just furious pushing of buttons and flailing of limbs. The band has shared stages and festival bills with the likes of Hextatic (Ninja Tune), The Heatwave (Rinse FM), Rustie (Warp), The Bays, Bonobo, Mary-Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Benji B (1xtra), Daedelus (Mush), Gaslamp Killer (Brainfeeder), Benga and more.

“Oh my god, this tune is ridiculous!!” - Mistajam (BBC Radio 1xtra)
“…impossible to stand still to. A truly innovative act…” - Counterfeit Magazine
“Absolutely sick!” - Gaslamp Killer (Brainfeeder, LA)
“Pure fire!” - Charlie Dark (Blacktronica/Attica Blues)

TM JUKE (TRU THOUGHTS)

Expertly combining the benefits of a comprehensive musical education with his reactionary love of laptop-based music, TM Juke (aka Alex Cowan) has quickly established himself as a prodigious songwriter and arranger, a broadminded and captivating DJ and an exceptionally talented producer.

His debut long-player, ‘Maps From The Wilderness’ boldly set new musical agendas whilst retaining a universal appeal; sounding both strikingly original and strangely familiar. But it wasn’t long before he teamed up with Alice Russell to work on her first full length offering. A relationship that has continued to blossom, and has led to Al becoming Alice’s band leader and right hand man.

On the decks, TM Juke effortlessly flips the switch between raw backbone funk, soul 45s, left-sided Latin and state-of-the-art broken boogie, crafting sets that have moved feet, hearts and minds throughout the world. Those intent on pigeon-holing him will name-check genres like funk, soul, hip hop and jazz; but his insatiable appetite for experimentation and ear for a great hook ensures that the music will always resist easy categorisation.

The latest endeavor for TM Juke is a collaboration with percussionist Jack Baker, who has for the last few years been a regular feature in both TM Juke and Bonobo’s live bands. Under the name TM Juke And The Jack Baker Trio, their album, “Boto And The Second Liners”, represents TM Juke and Jack Baker’s last five years on the road together. Embracing Junkyard grooves from New York; soul music from Memphis; blending swing music from New Orleans then mixing it with Brazilian samba to unleash a feast of carnival spirited songs; this album is pure party music, high energy, and not a ballad in sight. The pair employed the talents of some great players on the record, most notably singers Alice Russell, Kathrin deBoer of Belleruche, Andreya Triana, and Spanish singer Gecko Turner.

+ VERY SPECIAL GUEST VOCALIST (ACOUSTIC SET)

We’re having to keep this one under wraps, but needless to say, this is a lady you’ll rarely catch at such an intimate venue. If we told you who it was there would be a roadblock, so just make sure you head down early and see for yourself. Another big coup for Wah Wah 45s!
